Pat Duncan, the three-time defending San Diego City Amateur champion, shot a two-under-par 70 to take a three-shot lead over four others after the first round of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Championships at the La Jolla Country Club.

The 156-player field will be cut to 64 after today’s second round of medal play. The remaining 64 players will then be seeded for match play.

The group at 73 includes Jack Spradlin of San Diego. John Pigg of Austin, Tex., who won the tournament in 1984, is tied for seventh along with Jerry Michals of Vista, the medalist at this year’s California State Amateur.
