Floods and a landslide unleashed by torrential rains have killed more than 400 people and left more than 180 missing in central China’s Sichuan province, Chinese news reports said Thursday.

The worst incident occurred at Huaying in eastern Sichuan, where a cliff collapsed and sent mud and rock onto a residential compound, burying 238 people, the official New China News Agency reported. Rescue workers saved 17 people but recovered 41 bodies and there was little hope for the 180 people still missing.
