Ten endangered black rhinos, including one that is pregnant, arrived Sunday in searing heat at Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport as part of a breeding program designed to save the rare species.

The rhinos, dehydrated by their 60-hour trip from Zimbabwe, were unloaded from a jetliner and brought to a warehouse, where handlers used ice and jets of water to cool them off.

The species’ numbers have dwindled from 100,000 in 1960 to fewer than 3,000--a decline due mostly to poaching. The animals’ horns are used for dagger handles and for medicine in the Orient.

Two of the rhinos were to go to the Dallas zoo, two to the Ft. Worth zoo, two to the Milwaukee County zoo in Wisconsin, one to the San Diego zoo, two to El Coyote Ranch in Linn, Tex., and one to La Coma Ranch in Red Gate, Tex.
