Ford Owners Urged to Heed Recall: Federal safety officials urged owners of 518,000 Ford models to heed the auto maker’s recall, which resulted from a government investigation into 652 reports of engine fires. The recall was part of an announcement by Ford involving recalls of 2 million cars and trucks because of the possibility of the engine fires or problems with emissions systems. Owners of 296,000 1984 Ford Escort and EXP and Mercury Lynx cars, and of 222,000 1985 1/2 Escort and Lynx models will receive the recall. Some of the cars had been found to have engine cracks or leaking valve gaskets that could leak oil onto exhaust manifolds. Ford also said that it is adding $1,000 rebate offers on its Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis sedans and wagons to spur sales.
