Pharmaceuticals: Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Upjohn Co. said second-quarter income was up 8% to $95 million. The manufacturer and marketer of health-care products and services, agricultural products and pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals said results reflect accelerated marketing programs, stringent expense controls and a non-operating gain. Revenue was up 2% to $737 million. Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly & Co. said net income rose 20% to $217.1 million for the second quarter on a revenue gain of 11% to $1.122 billion. The company said the pharmaceutical and medical instrument areas were the major contributors to the corporation’s total sales growth. Morris Plains, N.J.-based Warner-Lambert Co. said net income up was 23% to $112 million in the second quarter. Revenue climbed 8% to $1.02 billion. Each of its major businesses--ethical pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter health-care products and confectioneries--contributed to results, the company said.
