Kaypro, a Solana Beach personal computer manufacturer, reported a profit but sharply lower sales for the third quarter ended May 31. Chairman Andrew Kay said third-quarter sales were depressed by receipt of a large number of defective parts called peripheral controller chips.

Kaypro’s profit for the quarter was $239,552 on sales of $3.8 million, contrasted with a loss of $1.6 million on sales of $16.9 million for the same quarter a year ago.

To boost fourth-quarter sales, Kaypro said, it will introduce an inexpensive line of microcomputers. To strengthen its capital, the company is also negotiating the sale of its European operation and a restructuring of its Australian unit.
