Bench’s Fans Travel by Bus to Cooperstown
Busloads of Johnny Bench’s fans from his days as the Cincinnati Reds’ star catcher departed from this Ohio River city Friday bound for his induction ceremony into the Baseball Hall of Fame Sunday at Cooperstown, N.Y.
“There’s a lot of excitement,” said Herb Reisenfeld, an organizer of the trip.
A Cincinnati travel agency organized the journey. About 640 people from the Cincinnati and Dayton areas departed Friday by bus from Cincinnati’s Union Terminal to head north for Buffalo, N.Y., where they planned to spend the night before traveling on to Cooperstown.
Bench and former Boston Red Sox star Carl Yastrzemski are to be inducted into the Hall before a packed crowd Sunday.
Eighty of Bench’s fans departed from Cincinnati earlier by plane to see the Reds play in Montreal before traveling on to the Cooperstown ceremony.
