Tennis Roundup : Shriver Defeats Hetherington in 3 Sets to Reach Semifinal

Second-seeded Pam Shriver needed three sets Friday to defeat Jill Hetherington and advance to the semifinal round of the Hall of Fame Championships at Newport, R.I.

Shriver rallied after losing the second set to beat her unseeded Canadian opponent, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Shriver will play South Africa’s Rosalyn Fairbank, who defeated Hu Na of San Diego, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4.

The other semifinal will pit top-seeded Zina Garrison against No. 8 Gigi Fernandez.

Garrison, who has not lost a set in this tournament, beat unseeded Michelle Jaggard of Australia, 6-4, 6-1, and Fernandez eliminated Laura Gildemeister of Peru, 6-3, 6-3.

Winning the decisive men’s doubles set, the Sacramento Capitals defeated the Los Angeles Strings, 26-24, in TeamTennis before 1,028 fans at the Forum.

The match was tied, 20-20, going into the fifth and final set, in which Sacramento’s Robert Van’t Hof and Greg Holmes beat the Strings’ John Lloyd and Roger Smith.

Smith had pulled the Strings even in the fourth set when he defeated Holmes in singles, 6-5.

At Schenectady, N.Y., Americans Scott Davis, Jeff Tarango and Dan Goldie were winners in second-round matches.

Davis defeated Neil Broad of South Africa, 7-5, 6-1; Tarango beat Vijay Amritraj of India, 6-3, 6-3, and Goldie eliminated Miguel Nido of Puerto Rico, 6-2, 6-4.

In another second-round match, Glenn Michibata of Canada, who played for Pepperdine, beat Nduka Odizor of Nigeria, 6-2, 6-3.
