The second annual SANE Kids Say No to Drugs telethon raised a record $450,000 in pledges to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department anti-drug program for elementary schools.

Hollywood celebrities and sheriff’s deputies took telephone pledges over the weekend under the wing of the Spruce Goose airplane in Long Beach. Performers such as Danny Glover, Red Buttons and Buddy Hackett participated in the telethon.

The SANE (Substance Abuse Narcotics Education) program is currently taught in 315 public and private schools in the county and concentrates on the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades, Deputy Bill Wehner said. This fall, it will be expanded to include an anti-gang segment along with a drug and pregnancy prevention program for high school students.
