Civic leaders and a Japanese diplomat broke ground Wednesday for a Japanese garden in Balboa Park’s Gold Gulch Canyon.

Gunkatsu Kano of the Japanese consulate in Los Angeles joined three City Council members and a Japanese drum ensemble to inaugurate the $11.4-million project that will encompass 11.5 acres near the Organ Pavilion.

The garden will feature mountainous terrain, a pond and a waterfall.
