Tanker Car Blaze Burns for 5th Day
A chemical fire in a derailed tanker car burned into a fifth day Wednesday after firefighters failed to snuff it, and an estimated 1,000 residents were forced to spend another night away from home.
Officials decided to let the fire burn itself out after attempts on Tuesday to smother it with sodium bicarbonate powder were unsuccessful.
The car has been burning since a train owned by CSX Transportation Inc. derailed Saturday. At least 3,000 people were forced to evacuate initially, but most of them were allowed to return Monday when the evacuation zone around the site was reduced to 4 square miles.
