Newbury Park Rider Leads Dressage Win

Marie Meyers of Newbury Park led a U. S. sweep of the top three places in Wednesday’s dressage competition, the opening event of the $148,000 Stockholm International Horse Show in Sweden. The show is a dress rehearsal for next year’s World Equestrian Games.

Meyers, riding Dimitrius, received 1.273 points from the five judges and finished just ahead of Robert Dover on Walzertak, who had 1.271 points. Carol Lavell on Gifted was third with 1.248 points.

Uta Wusthof, riding Ramon, and fellow West German Nicole Holzer on Ricardo, were fourth and fifth with 1.222 and 1.218 points.

The show’s featured event, Grand Prix jumping, is scheduled at Olympic Stadium on Sunday. The Grand Prix Nations Cup is set for Friday.

Erik Affholter came to terms with the Green Bay Packers, who selected him in the fourth round of the NFL draft. The terms of the pact were not disclosed.

Affholter played receiver at USC, where his juggling, sliding catch for a touchdown helped defeat UCLA in 1987 and send the Trojans to the Rose Bowl. He also punctuated his prep career by kicking a 64-yard field goal--then the longest in high school history--while attending Oak Park High in Agoura.

Stephanie Martin of Camarillo advanced to the third round of match play Wednesday in the U. S. Golf Assn. Junior Girls Championship at the Pine Needles Resort course in Southern Pines, N. C.

Martin defeated Nicole Granson of Russiaville, Ind., 6-and-5, and Beverly Hills’ Jennifer Choi, 4-and-3, in the first and second rounds.

Emilee Klein of Studio City was defeated in the first round of match play by Kristyl Sunderman of El Cajon, Calif., 3-and- 2.

The low 64 players from a field of 150 advanced to match play. The final match is set for Saturday.

Renee Hunt of Studio City, who shot 81-83--164 Tuesday, missed the cut.

Jason Gore of Valencia, who fired a four-over 76 in the first round Tuesday and a 79 in the second round Wednesday, failed to qualify for further play in the U. S. Boys’ Junior Championship at Singing Hills Golf and Country Club in El Cajon.

Jerry Chang of Westlake Village also failed to qualify, shooting a 79-80--159.

The Woodley Lakes Golf Course will host a scramble-format tournament next Thursday with proceeds going to the Vietnam Veterans Aid Foundation.

The entry fee is $60 and includes a round of golf, cart, refreshments and awards.

Chaminade High is offering a baseball skills camp for players ages 9 to 17 at the school’s West Hills Campus starting next week. The camp runs from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday under the direction of Chaminade baseball Coach George Vranau.
