The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has established a new administrative position to coordinate bilingual education and other programs for students who speak limited English.

The school board on Monday approved the post, with an annual salary of $43,246 to $50,592. The coordinator will work with bilingual and English as a Second Language teachers and review curricula and textbooks, said Francine Geldwachs, director of curriculum and staff development.

Previously, Geldwachs and a teacher on special assignment oversaw the bilingual and ESL programs, Geldwachs said. The coordinator position was created because “the programs have grown, and they’re important to the district,” she said.
