On Again

With Cher feeling fit, “Mermaids” is in the swim again with a Sept. 25 start date near Boston, producer Wally Nicita tells us. The Orion picture, you’ll recall, suffered the postponement of a July start date when the star took ill. That, in turn, forced co-star Emily Lloyd to drop out in favor of Winona Ryder because of another film commitment.
Ryder now has the plum part of Cher’s sensitive daughter in the comedy-drama about a free-spirited, single mother who finally tries to settle down. Bob Hoskins plays mom’s boyfriend. Frank Oz directs.
Lloyd, meanwhile, isn’t suffering from the ill-timing. She’s in London, starring with Kiefer Sutherland in “Chicago Joe and the Showgirl.” And she’s got “Cookie,” from director Susan Seidelman, awaiting release.
