Philadelphia Retires Steve Carlton’s No. 32
PHILADELPHIA — Steve Carlton was honored Saturday night by the Philadelphia Phillies, who retired his number.
Carlton, the greatest left-handed pitcher in the team’s history, stood at home plate before the Phillies’ game with the Pittsburgh Pirates and watched as his No. 32 was unveiled on the right-field wall.
Also on hand were Robin Roberts and Richie Ashburn. Roberts’ No. 36 and Ashburn’s No. 1 hang on the left-field wall.
Carlton did not talk to the media for much of his career, a fact he mentioned during his speech. “I thought they did a much better job without my quotes,” he said. “I thought it made them work a little harder and use more of their ability.”
