South Bay Stars Play for Classic Crown Saturday

The South Bay Stars will face a team from Obregon Park at 11:45 a.m. Saturday for the championship of the youth Summer Baseball Classic at Bodger Park in Hawthorne.

The Stars are 4-0 in the tourney and are coming off a 3-0 victory Wednesday over Jesse Owens Park. Jo Jo Triana has won all four games and will be the starting pitcher Saturday. He has pitched 15 scoreless innings with 24 strikeouts.

Wednesday’s game was decided by a two-run double in the third inning by first baseman Kevin McCarthy.

The Stars have outscored opponents, 33-6. Triana has five hits and six RBIs. Brandon Veit has six hits and Joshua Canales has scored nine runs, with leadoff man Johnny Walter scoring seven.

In earlier games, the Stars defeated Campanella Park, 14-0, in the first round, Ford Park (Bell Gardens), 5-2, in the second round and the Lynwood All-Stars, 11-4, in the third round.
