Man Rescued After His Jet Ski Overturns Off Shelter Island

Share

A 28-year-old San Diego man was rescued Friday evening by a sportfishing boat crew when his jet ski overturned while jumping boat wakes in San Diego Bay off Shelter Island.

A Coast Guard spokesman said Thomas Hamann apparently knocked himself out in the accident and was lying face down in the water until a crewman from the Pacific Dawn brought him to the boat.

The crew revived Hamann, and a Coast Guard rescue boat took him to shore, where paramedics continued resuscitation. Hamann was taken to Mission Bay Hospital for treatment of a head gash and for observation, the spokesman said.

A 14-year-old boy who was jet-skiing with Hamann attempted to help in the rescue but was unable to turn the older man over because of his size. Witnesses said Hamann was face down in the water more than a minute before the Pacific Dawn crewman reached him.
