The Argentine government wants to restore normal relations with Britain and remove any vestiges of the 1982 war the two countries fought over the Falkland Islands, Foreign Minister Domingo Cavallo said Friday.

“We believe it is possible to work toward the normalization of relations. . . . There is a commitment on our part and by the United Kingdom to make progress,” Cavallo said in an interview.

He said the lifting of trade restrictions with Britain on Tuesday was in line with the objectives of President Carlos Saul Menem, who took office July 8, to achieve “the fullest possible” relations with Britain.

He added that this does not mean that Argentina will stop pressing its sovereignty claim to the disputed islands, which Argentines call the Malvinas.

Argentina never formally announced the cessation of hostilities after a British task force recovered the South Atlantic archipelago from invading Argentine troops in a 10-week war.
