Walls Qualifies for Senior Diving Meet

Monte Vista graduate Kristen Walls finished fourth out of 51 divers in a one-meter meet in Irvine and qualified for the U.S. Senior Outdoor National Championships.

Walls, representing Los Angeles Dive Team, finished behind winner Courtney Nelson of Stanford Diving Club.

Walls, who will be a freshman at UCLA in the fall, will compete in the Junior Olympics, Tuesday through Saturday in Houston. The senior nationals will be in Raleigh, N.C., Aug. 15-19.

YACHTING

Dave Curtis of Marblehead, Mass., leads after the first race of the International Etchells World Championship regatta off Point Loma. Larry Klein and Bruce Nelson, both of San Diego, are second and third. The six-race series continues today on the 13.4-mile course.

TENNIS

Bruce Steel and Jack Griffin of La Jolla were among the winners in the opening qualifying round of the $25,000 Pilot Pen Open tennis tournament at New Haven, Conn.

Steel defeated Scott Bron of San Jose, 6-2, 6-4, and Griffin defeated Tony Pipa of Elysbrug, Va., 6-3, 6-2. Phil Moskal of San Diego was defeated, 6-0, 6-0, by Howard Endelman of Roslyn, N.Y.

Qualifying continues today, and the 32-player main draw starts Monday with the finals next Sunday.
