Hurricane Dean picked up speed as it headed north toward eastern Canada, a day after sideswiping Bermuda with 110-m.p.h. winds, torrential rains and pounding surf. A hurricane warning was issued for Sable Island, Nova Scotia, with a high-wind warning for St. Johns and the Avalon Peninsula. Tropical storm warnings were issued for the coastal areas of southern and eastern Newfoundland, the National Hurricane Center said in Coral Gables, Fla. Dean, the second hurricane of the 1989 Atlantic-Caribbean season, was centered about 275 miles south of Nova Scotia.
