NATION : Lomax Ending Atlanta Mayoral Bid

ATLANTA — Michael Lomax is dropping out of the race for mayor, an aide said today. The move leaves former Mayor Maynard Jackson as the only announced candidate, with little more than a week left for others to decide whether to run.
WAGA-TV and the Atlanta Journal reported that Lomax, the Fulton County Commission chairman, will drop out with an announcement later in the day. “The decision has been made that Michael just can’t win,” campaign spokesman Jim Gray told the television station.
Lomax and Jackson, both Democrats and both black, were seeking to succeed Andrew Young in the nonpartisan election Oct. 3.
