About 78,000 gallons of raw sewage flowed into the waters off La Jolla when a sewer pipe broke, health authorities reported Wednesday.

An 8-inch main in the 100 block of Fern Glen Avenue broke about 3 p.m. Tuesday, spilling sewage until the pipe was repaired seven hours later, said Diana Lucero, a spokeswoman for Health Services Department.

Health authorities were unsure what caused the break, Lucero said.

The sewage from the broken main entered a storm drain on Fern Glen and flowed into the waters at Vista de la Playa beach. Several signs warning of contamination were posted at the beach and will remain in place until Friday, Lucero said.
