U.S. District Judge Raul Ramirez, confirming published reports, says he is being considered for the post of National Football League commissioner.

Ramirez’s office issued a statement Wednesday saying he had been deluged with calls from reporters after press reports quoting unnamed sources as saying he is a candidate to succeed retiring NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle.

“Judge Ramirez is seriously interested in, and indeed a candidate for, the position of NFL commissioner,” the statement said. “He has had numerous communications with several NFL front offices and various other individuals associated with the game.

“However, due to the delicate nature of his position and the stage at which the commissioner selection process is presently involved, further details at this time would be inappropriate.”

A search committee is expected to meet in Chicago next week to conduct interviews with finalists to replace Rozelle.
