Cuba is expected to join the Security Council next Jan. 1 for the first time since Fidel Castro came to power Jan. 1, 1959.

Cuba, Romania, South Yemen, Ivory Coast and Zaire will serve two-year terms, filling vacancies on the the 15-nation council that will occur at the end of this year. Each of the five countries has been nominated by its regional group to succeed Brazil, Yugoslavia, Nepal, Senegal and Algeria. The unopposed nominees are virtually certain to be elected when the General Assembly chooses new council members, probably in late October.
