NATION : Wider Phone Workers Strike Looms

CHICAGO —
Unions representing telephone workers said today they were negotiating intensely with three more regional phone companies to avert a strike before the workers’ contracts expired Saturday at midnight.
If they fail to reach an agreement, workers at the regional phone companies--Ameritech, Southwestern Bell and US-West--will be joining thousands of striking telephone workers on the East and West coasts.
