A Comment on Dornan’s Commentary

Share

This letter is in regard to Rep. Robert K. Dornan’s commentary in the Times Orange County Edition: Rep. Dornan states in his commentary that the United States should not “seal its harbors” to Southeast Asian boat people. I fail to see how the United States can afford to take in so many of them when it cannot take care of its own people. Moreover, the bulk of the boat people settle in Southern California, which is already choking because of overcrowding.

He also states that Little Saigon in Westminster has experienced a “remarkable transformation into a thriving tax base of small businesses, restaurants and tourist attractions.” He says that the refugees accomplished this by pursuing the “American dream,” without support of our tax dollars, a subsidy or preferential treatment.

As for support from our tax dollars, many of these refugees are on welfare, and also receive a refugee cash assistance, which comes from Social Security. Is this what Dornan calls the “American dream?”
