‘A Priest on Abortion’
Regas’ thoughtful and prayerful article inspires my respect for his compassion and the sincerity with which he examines the question underlying our national debate on abortion: when did each of us become a human person?
Unfortunately, his answer, whether looked at scientifically or spiritually, will satisfy few of us. In saying that a fetus has only potential personhood until it “emerges as a human being at birth,” Regas offends my common sense.
I am certain that I was a unique, irreplaceable member of our human family long before I made it safely through my mother’s birth canal.
