Bangladesh President Hussain Mohammed Ershad appointed a new prime minister and named the displaced official as vice president in a surprise shuffling of his Cabinet. The official BSS news agency said Ershad swore in Deputy Prime Minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed as prime minister and former Prime Minister Maudud Ahmed as vice president. It said that former Vice President A.K.M. Nurul Islam had been relieved of his post. Islam, a former high court judge, had served for two years. The agency gave no explanation for the sudden changes in the two key posts.
