P.M. BRIEFING : Unions Push Against Bid for B.A.T.
Organized labor today announced a worldwide campaign to dissuade investors from participating in Sir James Goldsmith’s $21-billion hostile takeover bid for London-based B.A.T. Industries and its American subsidiary BATUS Inc.
“Where his takeovers have been successful, Goldsmith has dismantled companies, sold off assets and closed down plants,” said John DeConcini, international president of the Bakery, Confectionery, and Tobacco Workers International Union and a member of the AFL-CIO Executive Council.
“In each case, workers have paid a heavy price,” he told a news conference.
