From Times staff and wire service reports

An Irvine man leaving for work this morning discovered what police described as a homemade bomb on the hood of his son’s car.

The bomb, a combination Molotov cocktail and pipe bomb, failed to explode because of a faulty wick, Irvine Police Lt. Michael White said.

Three Irvine police units, vehicles from the Orange County Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Department bomb squad were called at 6:15 a.m. to dismantle the explosive device that was left on the hood of a car sitting in front of a house on Ash Tree Lane, White said. The owner of the car, John Hart, 22, was getting dressed for work when his father, Daniel Hart, spotted the bomb, White said. Police closed off the cul de sac in the University Park area near Michelson Drive while bomb experts worked for 2 1/2 hours to dismantle the device.

White said police knew of no suspects in the attempted bombing, adding that police were examining the device for fingerprints.
