Cinematic Responsibility
Daniel Cerone’s “Awakening to the Realities of Black Life” (Aug. 12) quotes director Charles Burnett as saying: “It’s nothing in a film anymore to see a person get their head bashed in or blown apart, and I think that’s probably one of the reasons why there’s so much violence on the streets today. Film makers have to take a responsibility and be accountable.”
Hooray for Mr. Burnett! For film makers and producers to deny that their violent films have an effect on the behavior of society reflects a head-in-the-sand attitude and a major denial.
Is it just a coincidence that as the media has become more explicitly violent, so has the behavior of society as a whole?
