Crest to Coast--Hikers, bikers and horseback riders are invited to travel along the Santa Ana River from its source in the San Bernardino Mountains to where it empties into the sea at Huntington Beach as part of an effort by San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange counties to promote the river’s recreational possibilities.

The group will primarily follow dirt trails along the river corridor on the five-day trip, and there will be camping stops along the way. The outing will start Sept. 1 at Heart Bar U.S. Forest Service Park and will end Sept. 5 at Huntington Beach State Park.

Organizers have invited people who pursue the various activities in order to stress the many ways the route can be used.

The river is channeled for much of its Orange County portion, but it is still relatively untouched in its upper stretches. Parts of the route have been designated as a National Trail.

Participants may join all or any part of the trek and they may eat catered group meals or provide their own food.

Shuttles will be available at the end of each day so that travelers can pick up their vehicles and move them to the next site.

The cost for a fully catered trip is $40 per day or $200 for the entire trip. Those providing their own meals pay $20 per day or $100 for the whole trip.

Reservations must be made by Friday. For information, call (714) 567-6203.
