Space agency officials said today they plan to send the space shuttle Columbia into orbit later this year in a dramatic bid to rescue an 11-ton satellite that threatens to enter Earth’s atmosphere and rain debris over a wide area.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials believe chances are remote that the satellite will hit the Earth, but they said that if it did, hot metal debris traveling hundreds of miles an hour could be spread over parts of the southern United States, Australia and Africa.
