The World : S. Africa Arrests Feared

Leaders of a three-week campaign to defy apartheid restrictions began going into hiding in South Africa to elude an apparent wave of arrests. The government of President Frederik W. de Klerk has intensified its crackdown on activities aimed at disrupting next month’s segregated elections for Parliament. Spokesmen for the Mass Democratic Movement, a coalition of anti-apartheid groups whose activities are restricted by government decree, could not be reached, and their associates said they had “gone to ground.” A police spokesman confirmed that authorities are looking for people “who have failed to comply with restrictions placed against them.”
