Pope John Paul II gave his blessing to a border-free Europe as he ended a three-day visit to Spain. After a 30-minute meeting with Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez, the pontiff left for Rome. Gonzalez said he and John Paul had discussed the conflict in Lebanon and the political situation in Eastern Europe, especially the Pope’s native Poland. Earlier, while in the medieval pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela, John Paul spoke of unity several times. He cited the role of Christianity in breaking down borders and bringing together people of different languages and cultures.
