Police fired tear gas today at 2,000 protesting university students and arrested 22 white women from a civil rights group in a crackdown on supporters of a nationwide defiance campaign.

Police headquarters reported unrest in nine black and mixed-race townships near Cape Town and said four officers had been injured in rioting. Numerous clashes were reported between stone-throwing youths and police units using tear gas and whips.

The white women, members of the Black Sash civil rights organization, stood in a market square in central Cape Town with banners that read, “One Person, One Vote.”
