Paul Roberts and Stanford

W. Glenn Campbell, the director of the Hoover Library at Stanford University, received a well-deserved tribute in Roberts’ article.
Whether Campbell is a “liberal” or a “conservative” or a “moderate”, he is above all a man of courage who has demonstrated his willingness to withstand the abuse of power from any direction.
Campbell, as a Regent of the University of California, tried to stop UCLA Chancellor Charles E. Young from closing the Fernald School, which had for 65 years been in the forefront of educating children with learning disabilities. Those with whom he stood in that fight were from various parts of the political spectrum, but in that endeavor they all stood for justice, fairness and decency. Although he was unsuccessful in the battle to keep the Fernald School from being closed, Campbell helped to write another chapter in the American tradition of fighting tyranny, whatever its guise.
