South African police tear-gassed 2,000 students near a mainly white university and arrested 20 white women staging an anti-apartheid demonstration as dozens of street barricades burned in black and mixed-race areas of Cape Town. The protests erupted one day after Anglican Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu and hundreds of schoolchildren were tear-gassed by police without warning after he persuaded the young people to call off an anti-apartheid rally. Tutu warned of bloodshed if the crackdown continues even as police darted from suburb to suburb in armored personnel carriers, vans and a helicopter in the fourth week of apartheid defiance.
