The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with their first-round draft pick, defensive end Burt Grossman of Pittsburgh, who is expected to begin practicing with the team today, club officials said.

Team officials declined to release terms of the contract, but Grossman said he had settled for an average of $610,000 for five years. He had been hoping to average between $600,000 and $650,000.

“If I don’t play up to $3 million, I’m a wasted pick,” Grossman said.

The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Grossman, the first defensive lineman taken in this year’s NFL draft and the eighth pick overall, is projected to start on the right side opposite Pro Bowl defender Lee Williams.
