Three Brothers Lead Division in Surfing

Three brothers--Jonathan, Israel and Abraham Paskowitz of San Clemente--are leading the young men’s division after Friday’s qualifying round of the fifth Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club contest.

Leading qualifiers in the men’s division (30-39) are Peter Townend of Westminster, a former world champion from Australia, and Chris Schlickenmeyer and Albert Jenks of Hawaii.

Leaders in the masters division (40 and up) include San Diegans Dale Dobson, L.J. Richards, Donald Takayama and Skip Frye.

David Nuuhiwa of Torrance leads the nose riding division with a time of 21.6 seconds.

The quarterfinals of the young men’s and men’s divisions will be today, along with the second round of the masters (40 and up) and the first round of the women’s division.

GOLF

Carlsbad’s Leta Lindley finished 20 strokes behind winner Vicki Goetze of Hull, Ga., who shot a total of 295 during the four-day PGA Junior Championships held at the Haig course at the PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

In the boys’ division, San Diego’s Chris Riley finished 22 strokes behind winner Bobby Collins of Atlantis, Fla., who shot 288.

A pro-am golf tournament will be held next Friday at the Fountains Executive Course at Lawrence Welk Resort Village. The format will be best-ball for two in each foursome, which will include a professional and three amateurs. For information, call 749-3225.

Michael Jordan will host a celebrity golf tournament Sept. 8-10 at the La Costa Hotel and Spa in Carlsbad. The tournament will benefit the United Negro College Fund. Expected to participate are Larry Bird, James Worthy, Carl Lewis, Calvin Peete and singer Smokey Robinson.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego will play host to Stanford today at 11 a.m. in Triton Pavillion. Stanford is second-ranked nationally in the preseason Division I poll. UCSD has been ranked third in Division III.

SDSU’s men’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams will play against alumni teams tonight. The soccer game will be at 6 p.m. at the Aztec Bowl, the volleyball game at 7:30 p.m. at Peterson Gym.
