Rev. Lou Sheldon and Rights of Homosexuals

Share

The Commentary by the Sheldon is a display of ignorance and bigotry.

A few weeks ago I visited a young man in prison. Since he was 12 years old he harbored a secret he was too afraid to tell anyone, including his parents. For, you see, his parents also held the same views as Sheldon. Six years later, after having lived an exemplary life, the young man was exposed. Not being able to handle the rejection from his parents, he erupted like a volcano and killed someone.

It is people like Sheldon who incite others to hate by preaching “traditional values,” a euphemism for prejudice and bigotry.

Sheldon says that when the Board of Supervisors voted down an anti-discrimination ordinance (regarding) homosexuals, they were in effect not “granting legitimacy to sodomy.” The American people are no longer falling for these kinds of misleading, vicious attacks on the gay community.

Homosexuals, like other minorities who have been persecuted and discriminated against, only want to be left alone. They see no reason why they shouldn’t be afforded the same civil rights as every other American citizen.

Sheldon’s paranoia has him believing that our country’s health and welfare is at stake because homosexuals do not want to be victims of discrimination. It is his kind of prejudice, bigotry, and discrimination against groups of people who are different that is destroying our society.

His commentary is not filled with love, compassion and understanding, but with hatred, condemnation and intolerance.

Through education, the majority of American citizens have a better understanding and more compassion for those who are different than most of us. Fortunately, the tide is turning and Sheldon and those who share his bigotry and ignorance are now in the minority.
