Residents of Baja California Sur braced for high winds and rains as Hurricane Kiko, with 100-m.p.h. winds, roared toward northern Mexico’s Pacific coast. The storm is expected to hit by early today, and small craft were advised to remain in port. Mexico’s Excelsior news service reported some rain and high winds in La Paz, the capital of sparsely populated Baja California Sur, about 750 miles south of Tijuana. According to the National Weather Service in Miami, hurricane warnings were in effect for the Gulf of California side of the Baja peninsula northward to Bahia Concepcion, about 200 miles north of La Paz.
