The Nation : More Striking Telephone Workers Settle

Share

About 4,200 striking telephone workers reached a tentative settlement with Wisconsin Bell, a day after workers at Ohio Bell also reached a tentative contract. But the workers planned to stay off the job until their counterparts in other Midwestern states reached settlements, a spokesman said. Both state companies are subsidiaries of the five-state Ameritech regional telephone company, which has been strikebound since Aug. 13. The Ameritech strike is one of four this month involving 200,000 workers in 20 states and the District of Columbia. Unions have negotiated tentative settlements with striking employees at Pacific Telesis, which serves California and Nevada, and Bell Atlantic, which covers West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the District of Columbia.
