Four children ranging in age from 9 to 14 were apprehended for allegedly firing .22-caliber rifles at passing motorists on Interstate 95, wounding one person, police said Sunday.

The youngsters were captured Saturday night after someone reported gunfire from a wooded area near the highway and police sent a helicopter, state police spokesman Chuck Jackson said.

The shootings apparently began Aug. 18, when a man was wounded in the shoulder, Jackson said. State police also confirmed at least three other incidents of gunfire damaging vehicles, he said.
