Bradley Appointee to Library Panel OKd

The Los Angeles City Council Tuesday confirmed Mayor Tom Bradley’s appointment of a Westside attorney to the Library Commission despite complaints that no Hispanics or Asians sit on the panel.

In a letter distributed to the council, Councilwoman Gloria Molina criticized Bradley’s system of making appointments to city commissions and called for a review of the policies concerning minorities.

Molina, who was on vacation, said in her letter that she was not criticizing Douglas Ring, a former deputy county supervisor and law professor, but was concerned that Hispanics and Asians were denied “fair political representation” on the Library Commission.

Molina said she was concerned that library services were inferior in Hispanic and Asian communities, and that the lack of Hispanics and Asians in management roles within the library system has resulted in an insensitivity to ethnic concerns.
