SDSU Women Open Volleyball Season by Beating USC

The 14th-ranked San Diego State women’s volleyball team opened the season with a 15-10, 15-9, 15-8 victory over No. 16 USC in a nonconference match Tuesday night at Peterson Gym.

Middle blocker Amy Erben led the Aztecs with 14 kills, and Shannon Mathew added 12. Yleana Carrasco had 11 kills for USC, which was playing its first match for Coach Lisa Love. The Trojans had 28 hitting errors and hit .085 for the match.

The Aztecs play host to the six-team ASICS Grand Prix Tournament Friday and Saturday. The tournament includes No. 9 Washington.

SOCCER

The San Diego State men’s soccer team is ranked No. 15 among NCAA Division I schools and defending champion UC San Diego is rated No. 1 in the Division III poll. The polls are sponsored by the Intercollegiate Soccer Assn. of America.

The Aztecs, who reached the NCAA final two years ago, received 41 points. Indiana is ranked No. 1 with 355 points, followed by Virginia and Portland.

Other teams ranked from the West are UCLA (eighth) and Santa Clara (19th).

UCSD had 259 points to 239 for Williams College (Mass.) and 220 for Messiah College (Pa.).

GOLF

Bill Soyars and Bob Astleford of San Marcos were eliminated in the second round of the World Senior Golf Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Jim Agara of Norman, Okla., the 1987 champion, defeated Soyars, 3 and 1, and tournament medalist Jim Vickers of Indian Wells defeated Astleford, 1-up.
