Famed tenor Luciano Pavarotti will sing no more at Chicago’s Lyric Opera. He has canceled one too many performances, opera officials said.

Pavarotti had been scheduled to sing the role of Cavardossi in the Lyric’s 35th anniversary season performance of Puccini’s “Tosca” but canceled because of a persistent inflammation of his sciatic nerve, said Herbert Breslin, his manager.

This upset the people at the Lyric.

“The Lyric Opera is now unwilling to take the risk of one more cancellation by Mr. Pavarotti,” General Manager Ardis Krainik said, noting that the tenor had canceled 26 of 41 scheduled appearances at the Lyric since 1981.

Krainik rejected the reason for the latest cancellation, saying, “I did everything possible to try to persuade him to fulfill his commitment with us but he told me he could not come.” Krainik said she even offered to allow Pavarotti to perform while seated.
