Sharing the Wealth : Sales Tax Revenues

The State Board of Equalization on Aug. 17 distributed to local governments their share of funds from statewide sales and use taxes.

A total of nearly $405.2 million was divided among cities and redevelopment agencies, counties, special tax districts and local transportation funds.

The lion’s share of the 6% sales and use tax, 4.75%, goes to the state’s general fund. Local governments receive 1% for general operations and 0.25% for transportation purposes. Also, in many counties, special districts have been created that tax sales an additional 0.5%., making the overall rate 6.5%. The state returns the extra revenue to the districts.

For example, the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission received $36.1 million. In San Diego County, the Regional Transportation Commission got $8.6 million and the Regional Justice Facility Financing Agency got $8.3 million for jail construction.
