The Big Eight : Sooners Open Gibbs Era by Routing Aggies, 73-3

Some of the names were new for the 15th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The result was old hat.

Oklahoma, with a new coach and a new quarterback, scored on its first five possessions in rolling over New Mexico State, 73-3, Saturday at Norman, Okla.

Gary Gibbs, successor to Barry Switzer, watched his team roll up 555 yards.

Redshirt freshman Steve Collins became the first freshman in the school history to open a season starting at quarterback. He mainly handed off to his running backs.

Leon Perry, a 220-pound senior fullback, scored on runs of 11, one and six yards as Oklahoma ran for 231 yards in the first half.

As expected, the Sooners used something other than the wishbone offense much of the time. Six of their touchdowns came out of the new multiple-I formation.

Oklahoma used all three of its quarterbacks along with 10 running backs.

Kansas 41, Montana State 17--Kelly Donohoe passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third as the Jayhawks began their 100th football season with a victory over the Division I-AA Bobcats at Lawrence, Kan.
