John McAfee Preston, 83, who founded the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort as well as a ranch that became the Preston Vineyards and Winery. Preston, whose great-grandfather founded the Kern County Land Co., established the Preston Ranch Co. in Sonoma County in 1951. The ranch was the precursor of Preston Vineyards, established by his son, Louis, in Healdsburg, Calif. Preston commanded a flight school for the Army during World War II and after the war was a founder of the ski resort near Lake Tahoe. In Hillsborough, Calif. on Monday.
